Biography

Dorcas Macky was born in Derry, the city now in Northern Ireland, on January 3, 1851, the youngest of William Macky and Susannah Dill's five children. The family history records her arrival at one in the morning, about four months after the reported loss of her father's farm at Lisfannan.

She was still a small child when William left for Victoria, in southeastern Australia, in May 1852. Dorcas stayed in Ireland with Susannah and the other children. The anticipated family reunion never took place: William's letters ceased, and the later family account records unsuccessful efforts to discover his fate.
