Biography

Grace Macky was born at Lisfannan, County Donegal, in northwestern Ireland, on September 26, 1845, the second of William Macky and Susannah Dill's five children. The family history records the time as 7:08 in the evening. Her father farmed at Lisfannan.

Grace was six when William left for Victoria, in southeastern Australia, in May 1852. She remained in Ireland with her mother and siblings. The family expected to follow him, but his letters stopped, leaving Susannah to raise the five children with help from a small Presbyterian allowance.
