The life of Susannah Dill
Biography
Susannah Dill remained in Ireland with five children when her husband, William Macky, left for Victoria, in southeastern Australia, in 1852. They expected to join him. Instead, his letters stopped. A 1913 account credits Susannah with bringing up the children with a small annual payment from the Irish Presbyterian Church's Widows' Fund, received after her father's death.
Born around 1812, she was a daughter of Rev. Richard Dill of Knowhead and Grace Cochrane. Her married life began in a farming household at Lisfannan, County Donegal, in northwestern Ireland. The family history places daughter Grace's birth there on September 26, 1845 and Dorcas's in Derry, now in Northern Ireland, on January 3, 1851, shortly after the reported loss of William's farm. Their sons were James, Richard and William Marcus.
Susannah lived to see James enter medicine and Richard and William Marcus enter the ministry. The compiled family record dates her death to October 28, 1888.
The 1913 obituary associates William Marcus with Sydney, Richard with Byron Bay and James with Ulmarra, all in New South Wales, Australia.
