The life of Cherie Joyce Ceberano

Biography

Cherie Joyce Ceberano's working life has included performance, martial arts and the business of music. The daughter of Charles Douglas “Doug” Joyce and Kathleen Hammond “Kath” Good Joyce, she was Kaye Joyce's sister and married Tino Ceberano. Their daughter Kate became a nationally known singer, but Cherie's own activities began well before the management work that later linked mother and daughter professionally.

One particularly vivid recollection comes from Kate. Looking back on the Adelaide Festival Centre's opening celebrations in 1973, she described Cherie and Kaye as water-ballet swimmers who performed on the River Torrens in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Rehearsals had taken place in a clear swimming pool; the river's poor underwater visibility made keeping formation a different proposition.

Cherie also participated in the growth of the Ceberano karate schools. Their institutional history credits her with helping the effort to welcome women into mixed classes from the early 1970s.

Her subsequent work in music was a continuing professional role. In June 2018, when Kate announced a new management arrangement, the music-industry press named Cherie among the longtime consultants at Ceberano Productions. She worked alongside Ben Balfour and Kate's husband, Lee Rogers, as Lisa Palermo joined the management team.

She married Tino in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1963. Family material and Kate’s recollections also preserve Cherie’s work painting portraits and a photograph of her as a teenager with her parents in London’s Trafalgar Square.
