Biography
Jude Bourassa studied at Carey Mission, Hamilton Literary & Theological Institution and Choctaw Academy. An 1826 treaty granted him land. In 1837, he sought to undo a sale made while underage, petitioning through court and federal channels in an unsuccessful effort to avoid removal. He married Marie Catherine Charet in 1833 and moved west in 1840.
Near Mill Creek in Kansas, Jude operated a government-assisted gristmill and boarding house. An 1854 visitor described two guest beds, an imported carpet, a piano and a served supper in the log house. Jude also signed the 1846 treaty.
Citizen Potawatomi Nation's profile attributes his death in 1857 to smallpox. The existing family chronology leaves the exact date and medical cause unresolved.
