The life of Eugene / “Ugane” Bourassa
Biography
Eugene Bourassa belonged to the generation born as the Bourassa family was being displaced from the Great Lakes. The family chronology gives his birth as July 18, 1839. The accepted family reconstruction identifies Eugene, also called Ugane, as a son of Jude Bourassa and Marie Catherine Charet, also written Charest. Citizen Potawatomi Nation’s family history names Eugene among their children.
The tribal history describes Jude’s separate departure from the Great Lakes in August 1840 and his later establishment of a grist mill near Mill Creek in what is now Kansas, in the central United States.
Eugene later formed a family with the woman recorded as Herline, Ellen or Adeline Gagnon. The family account identifies them as the parents of Delilah Bourassa. The chronology places his death around 1878.
