Biography
In Gastonia, North Carolina, John Doane “Jack” Wicks and Paul Crawshaw founded WIX in 1939. Wicks's filtration work survives in patent 2,627,350, an improved filter cartridge for which he filed an application on 12 January 1949. That is the filing date, rather than the date the patent was granted.
Family records place him in World War I service, although his rank and unit remain unknown. On 1 November 1949, he was aboard Eastern Air Lines Flight 537 when it collided with another aircraft near Washington National Airport. Wicks died in the crash.
