The life of Elizabeth Knopp Philbrick

Text size

Biography

Elizabeth Knopp was baptized at Bures St. Mary, in Suffolk, England, on the River Stour at the Essex county boundary, on July 8, 1593, a daughter of William Knopp and Elizabeth Reade. She married Thomas Philbrick on June 4, 1615. Bures parish entries record the baptisms of their children, including John in 1616, James in 1619, Elizabeth in 1621, and Martha in 1631.

Elizabeth and Thomas moved their family to New England, living first at Watertown, west of Boston in Massachusetts, and later at Hampton, on the coast of present-day New Hampshire. Their children did not all make the move between the two towns at the same time. The household ultimately settled around the Hampton property that Thomas acquired from their son in 1651.

In October 1657 their son John was lost at sea with his wife and a daughter, shortly after their vessel departed Hampton River for Boston. Elizabeth lived for another six years. She died at Hampton on February 19, 1664, after a marriage of nearly forty-nine years that had begun in a Suffolk parish and continued across the Atlantic.

Her surname also appears as Knapp.
