The life of James Philbrick

Text size

Biography

James Philbrick was a mariner who lived on the Philbrick homestead in Hampton, on the coast of present-day New Hampshire. A son of Thomas Philbrick and Elizabeth Knopp, he married Ann Roberts of the family at Dover, farther north in present-day New Hampshire. Their recorded children were born between 1651 and 1668, including James, Apphia, Esther, Thomas, Sarah, Joseph, Elizabeth, and Mehetabel.

James had responsibility for his father's estate. At the Hampton court in October 1667, he was ordered to bring an inventory of Thomas Philbrick senior's property to the next Salisbury court. The entry places him in the practical work of settling the older generation's affairs.

His own life ended on the water. On November 16, 1674 he drowned in Hampton River with Peter Johnson. Ann was left with a household that still included young children. She subsequently married William Marston, the younger man of that name. His son James also became a mariner.

The burial listing associates James Philbrick with Pine Grove Cemetery, Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, United States.
