The life of Bartlett Wicks

Text size

Ambulance papers and a theatre programme

Bartlett Wicks's papers at the University of Utah include wartime letters, enlistment material, maps, insignia and travel records. They also preserve two volumes assembled from the diaries of other men.

Born on April 16, 1895, Bartlett was a son of Frederick Stanton Wicks and Lily Moulton Doane. In 1917 he served in France with Section 67 of the American Field Service and subsequently with the United States Army Ambulance Service.

The archive's catalogue extends beyond wartime service. A programme for an American Legion show in 1922 lists both Bartlett and Margaret Ann Walker among the cast. They married in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 9, 1923.

Bartlett entered Salt Lake City's business life through E. B. Wicks & Co. A 1923 directory identifies him as secretary and treasurer of the firm, whose activities included real estate, loans and fire insurance. The family record subsequently places him at its head.

He also held a consular appointment. Monaco's official directory records him as consul in Salt Lake City for Monaco, the small independent principality on Europe’s Mediterranean coast. He represented Monaco in Utah.

Bartlett died on August 25, 1981. The surviving collection offers several different routes into his life—ambulance service, business, civic performance and consular work.

The family account places his birth in Chicago and names their son Edward Bartlett Wicks, born in 1926. It records Bartlett’s later presidency of E. B. Wicks Co.; Monaco’s directory entry dates his consular appointment to August 26, 1955.

The burial listing places Bartlett Wicks at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, United States.
