Charles Lewis Tiffany

1812 — 1902

Their story

Charles Lewis Tiffany was born at Killingly, Connecticut, in 1812, the son of Comfort Tiffany. In 1837 he and John B. Young opened a stationery and fancy-goods shop in New York City with one thousand dollars borrowed from Charles’s father.[1,3]

The business expanded into jewelry and silverware. After its other partners retired in 1853, Charles took control under the name Tiffany & Co. Its silver manufacturing used the sterling standard of 92.5 percent silver. In 1858 he bought surplus Atlantic telegraph cable and sold pieces as souvenirs, including paperweights and watch charms.[3]

His son Louis Comfort Tiffany became an artist and designer. Charles died in 1902.[1,3]
