John Tilley

c.1571 — 1620

Their story

John Tilley was baptized at Henlow, Bedfordshire, on 19 December 1571, the son of Robert Tilley. He married Joan Hurst Rogers Tilley there on 20 September 1596. Their children were Rose, who died young, John, a second Rose, Robert and Elizabeth Tilley Howland.[1,3]

John, Joan and Elizabeth sailed on the Mayflower in 1620, alongside John’s brother Edward and Edward’s wife. John signed the Mayflower Compact and joined the coastal expedition of 6 December that selected Plymouth as the settlement site.[3]

He and Joan died during the first winter of 1620–1621. Elizabeth survived the first winter; their other children had remained in England.[3]
