The life of Agnès Gagné
Biography
Agnès Gagné’s short life was centered on La Prairie, across the St. Lawrence River from Montréal in present-day Québec, Canada. The family register places her birth on December 17, 1692. A source-cited family compilation also records her baptism that day and names her parents as Pierre Gagné and Catherine Dobigeon.
She married René Bourassa on October 23, 1710. Their marriage belonged to the early part of his life, before the western trading activities for which he is better known. The scholarly account of René identifies three children from this first marriage. Their son René was born on June 1, 1718.
Agnès died on December 15, 1719, shortly before her twenty-seventh birthday. The compilation distinguishes that date from her burial on the following day. Her son René was about eighteen months old.
