The life of Sylvia Chamberlain Wicks
Biography
Sylvia Wicks Garvey served in the United States Navy during the Second World War. Her obituary, published in Michigan in August 2009, made that service a prominent part of the account of her life. Her rank, assignment and posting are unknown.
Sylvia was the daughter of John Doane “Jack” Wicks and Mary Elizabeth “Libbie” Carpenter Stevens Wicks. Family material places her birth in Syracuse, New York, in June 1924 and identifies the musician John Doane Wicks Jr as her brother. Sources disagree by one day on her birthday; the month and year are consistent.
Her memorial records an earlier marriage to Robert Harold Nelson and a later marriage to Louis Patrick Garvey. When she died, Louis had already predeceased her. The contemporary obituary names Patrick Garvey, Cindy Bradley, Ingrid Stefl, and Mike Garvey as her children and records a family extending through grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sylvia died on August 17, 2009, aged eighty-five, and was described as a resident of West Bloomfield, in the Detroit area of southeastern Michigan. Funeral arrangements were made through McCabe Funeral Home in nearby Farmington Hills.
The family directory places her death at Royal Oak, Michigan, distinct from her residence at West Bloomfield and the funeral arrangements in Farmington Hills.
The burial listing places Sylvia Chamberlain Wicks at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery, Southfield, Oakland County, Michigan, United States.
