Biography

Minnie Mabel Chamberlain married Gilbert Congdon Carpenter and was the mother of Mary Elizabeth “Libbie” Carpenter. Outside the household, she kept accounts, organized events and pressed for women's votes. In 1914, she chaired a bazaar subcommittee for the Rhode Island Woman Suffrage Association. She later served as an auditor of the merged equal-suffrage association, marched with suffragists in Massachusetts and lobbied Governor R. Livingston Beeckman before the 1916 election.

A researched suffrage biography credits Minnie as a 1919 co-founder and first state commissioner of the Rhode Island Girl Scouts. It also records her work with the Elizabeth Beeckman Emergency Fund, Providence Animal Rescue League and Rhode Island Consumers' League. In 1925, she represented Providence's Chopin Club at the National Federation of Music Clubs meeting in Portland and brought her report back to the club.
