Harriet Zeviah / Zerviah Pope Carpenter

Biography

Harriet Zeviah Pope, whose middle name also appears as Zerviah, was born in Massachusetts in 1842. The working family reconstruction identifies her parents as William Ruggles Pope and Mary B. Beers. On June 5, 1867 she married Francis Wood Carpenter at Providence, Rhode Island, becoming his second wife.

Their children included Harriet Armington, born in February 1868; Gilbert Congdon, born in September 1869; Julia Swain, born in July 1871; and Hannah Thayer, born in November 1874. The sequence places Harriet at the center of a growing household during the first years of the marriage.

Harriet died on March 30, 1925. She was buried in Newman Cemetery at East Providence, Rhode Island. The photograph of the family monument brings her name together with those of other members of the Carpenter household and earlier generation, preserving a physical record alongside the compiled genealogy.

Francis died in 1922, before Harriet’s death in 1925. His work had included Providence’s iron and steel trade and banking.
