The life of Anne-Charlotte-Véronique Chevalier

Biography

Anne-Charlotte-Véronique Chevalier first appears in the surviving parish summary as a daughter of Jean-Baptiste Chevalier. Her baptism is entered on March 1, 1726, with the familiar name Nannette alongside her formal names. The entry places her within the parish community of Michilimackinac, in the Straits of Mackinac region of present-day Michigan, from childhood.

On August 3, 1744 she married René Bourassa. Their infant son René-François was part of that day’s recorded ceremony: the parents acknowledged him as their legitimate child, and the priest supplied the ceremonies of baptism. The child had been born on March 31. His godparents were his grandfather Bourassa and Marie-Françoise Alavoine, Anne-Charlotte’s mother.

Eight years later, the register records the birth and baptism of Daniel, naming his mother simply as Anne Chevalier. He was born on the morning of October 8, 1752 and baptized that day. The commandant Beaujeu served as godfather.

These entries show Anne-Charlotte participating in a family network that joined the Chevalier and Bourassa households across generations. Her name changes form in the records, but the identified husband, parents, and children keep those appearances connected.
