The life of Pierre-Thomas Tarieu de La Pérade
Biography
Pierre-Thomas Tarieu de La Pérade was born on September 11, 1677 and baptized at Québec on November 12. In 1706 he married Madeleine Jarret de Verchères; their marriage contract is dated September 8. They made their home at Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade, beside the St. Lawrence northeast of Trois-Rivières, where he held part of the seigneury. He served as a lieutenant in the colonial regular troops. Their household included five children. A notarized purchase dated June 15, 1709 records his acquisition of Pascal, an Indigenous man about nineteen years old, for 120 livres. The family’s property history includes this act of enslavement. Litigation involving the priest Gervais Lefebvre later drew the couple into a prolonged dispute, which Madeleine pursued in France in 1732–1733. Pierre-Thomas died on January 25, 1757 and was buried at La Pérade the following day. DICKERSON LITIGATION G1
