The life of John Dill (Springfield)
Biography
John Dill made his home at Springfield in Fanad, the peninsula in County Donegal in northwestern Ireland. A Burke-derived family pedigree records that he acquired the property from Andrew Patton between 1768 and 1770. A local heritage account describes John and his brother Mark as Presbyterian farmers who leased Springfield from the Patton family. Both accounts connect the brothers with the estate, although they describe its tenure differently.
The family pedigree gives John's birth as 1726 and his marriage to Susan McClure as October 10, 1764. Their children included Richard, later minister at Knowehead, and Samuel, who also entered the Presbyterian ministry. John died on April 4, 1804, according to the same family record.
