The life of Thomas Paul Joyce

Text size

Biography

Thomas Paul Joyce worked as a carrier and later as a linesman. The AIF Project records his birthplace as Avoca, in northeastern Tasmania, Australia, and lists his wife, E. M. Joyce, at an address in Macquarie Street, Hobart, the island’s capital.

During the First World War he served as Private 3504 in the 40th Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne, in Victoria on the Australian mainland, with its 9th Reinforcement aboard the Aeneas on October 30, 1917, aged 37. The military compilation labels November 20, 1918 as his return to Australia. That may mark departure for home rather than arrival; a court account places his return in January 1919.

Newspaper court reports describe his marriage to Edith Marion at Hobart in April 1903 and their separation in 1922. The divorce became absolute on November 21, 1927.

The AIF Project gives his death as July 1, 1946 and records a plaque in the Launceston Garden of Remembrance.
