The life of Maria Weakly Prideaux

Text size

Biography

Maria Weakly was a servant living at Forda when she married Jacob Prideaux at North Petherwin, in southwestern England, on August 1, 1850. Her father, William Weakly, was recorded as a labourer.

In 1852 she sailed to South Australia, the colony centered on Adelaide, aboard the Gloucester with Jacob and their infant son William. The passenger list records Maria as 26. The marriage, passenger and land records support her probable identification with the Maria named alongside Jacob in the South Australian family entry for their daughter Maria Prideaux, later Anderson.
