The life of Jacob Prideaux

Text size

Biography

Jacob Prideaux worked as a servant before emigrating to South Australia. He married Maria Weakly at North Petherwin, in southwestern England, on August 1, 1850; the parish transcription names his father as William Prideaux, a labourer.

Jacob, Maria and their infant son William travelled aboard the Gloucester in 1852. The passenger record gives both adults’ ages as 26 and associates the household with Cornwall, the county at England’s southwestern tip.

In South Australia, land-record abstracts place Jacob at Hindmarsh, a district of Adelaide, as a labourer in 1854 and later at Port Adelaide. He died on March 6, 1868, aged 42, without leaving a will. The abstract identifies his eldest son William as his heir.

His daughter Maria’s birth index and wedding announcement also name Jacob as her father. The family research describes his work as farm labour.
