Biography

Jacques Hecquet was a master ropemaker and rope merchant associated with Saint-Georges parish in Abbeville, on the Somme River in northern France. The biographical account of his son Philippe names both Jacques and Catherine Pigné, anchoring the physician’s family in an identifiable urban trade.

A compiled Hecquet genealogy dates Jacques’s marriage to Catherine to October 10, 1654 and reports that he made a will in 1690. The family chronology gives his lifespan as 1629–1691.
