The life of Mary / Marie Bucket Soule

Text size

Biography

Mary, whose surname appears in later accounts as Bucket or Beckett, came to Plymouth, the English colony on the coast of present-day Massachusetts, aboard the Anne in 1623. She married George Soule about 1625 or 1626. Unlike her husband, she had not crossed on the Mayflower.

The cattle division of May 1627 places Mary, George and their son Zachariah together in a group with members of the Warren family and John Billington. Their group received a black heifer and two female goats. They shared the animals with the other members of their thirteen-person group.

Mary later lived with George in Duxbury, north of Plymouth, and their family grew to nine children. Her own name surfaces in a court action on March 1, 1658/59. The court fined her ten shillings for frequently missing public worship, listing her as George Soule's wife among several other people charged with the same offense.

She also appears in the language of family property transfers. A July 1668 deed says George acted with Mary's consent in giving land to Francis Walker, husband of their daughter Elizabeth. Another instrument dated March 1668/69 says that Mary relinquished her interest in the half-share given to Elizabeth, although George alone signed that document.

The burial listing associates Mary / Marie Bucket Soule with Standish Burial Ground, Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States.
