The life of Pierre François Hecquet
Biography
Pierre François was born at Biache-Saint-Vaast, in what is now Pas-de-Calais in northern France, on March 21, 1680 to Charles Hecquet and Marie Anne Ponce. He married Marie Claire Hélène Moguet on September 23, 1712. Their son Alexandre Joseph was born in 1720.
A compiled family account records an unusually useful sequence of occupations: gorlier, then censier, then laboureur. Gorlier is an older term connected with making horse collars and harness. Censier and laboureur place his later work in farming, with the former referring to a tenancy. The sequence traces a change from a craft serving working animals to farming.
The accepted family chronology gives his death as December 30, 1728. The occupational sequence adds a dimension missing from a list of births and marriages: Pierre François belonged to both the craft and agricultural economy of his community.
