The life of Nathaniel Batchelder Sr.

Text size

Biography

Nathaniel Batchelder made his living as a merchant in Southampton, a port on England’s south coast. He was a son of the Reverend Stephen Bachiler, whose later career carried him to New England. A Court of Requests record dated November 2, 1639 places Nathaniel in Southampton and connects him with his siblings Ann in London and Samuel in Gorcum, now usually called Gorinchem, in the Netherlands. His family relationships crossed several trading and religious communities.

His first wife was Hester Mercer. Their children included Anna, Francis, and Nathaniel, the latter later settling at Hampton. Mercer family wills preserved these connections after their parents' deaths. Nathaniel married again, to Margery. He had died by April 9, 1645, when she administered his estate.

The family chronology places his son Nathaniel’s birth around 1630.
