The life of Lucy Dow Hobbs
Biography
Lucy Dow was born on October 26, 1695 to Jabez Dow and Esther Shaw. She married James Hobbs on January 1, 1720 and settled with him at Little River, in the Hampton area on the New Hampshire coast. Her children were born across sixteen years, beginning with Esther in 1720 and ending with Comfort in 1736.
As those children grew, Lucy saw their lives extend into other households and communities. Her son James graduated from Harvard, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1748 and was ordained at Pelham, in southern New Hampshire, three years later. Patience married Simon Lamprey, while another daughter, Lucy, married Daniel Sanborn. The family also experienced the death of Sarah in August 1749.
Lucy died on December 27, 1755, aged sixty. Her husband and their son Jonathan died in the following weeks. Her own life had spanned the public household of Captain Jabez Dow and more than thirty-five years of marriage at the Hobbs place.
