The life of Joan Harvey

Text size

Biography

Seventeenth century–1705

Joan, also recorded as Joanna, was the wife of Robert Barnard and the mother of Stephen Barnard. The Nantucket historical account gives her maiden surname as Harvey. Her family’s movements connected the mainland communities of Salisbury and Andover in northeastern Massachusetts with Nantucket, the island south of Cape Cod.

She appears with Robert in the published summary of a deed conveying their former Andover house and lot to Simon Bradstreet after they had moved to the island.

The family also suffered a sudden loss: Hoyt records that their son John and his wife drowned in June 1669, only months after their marriage. Robert died in 1682, leaving Joan a widow. She survived him for more than twenty years, with her death recorded as March 31, 1705.
