The life of Stephen Barnard Sr.
Biography
About 1649–1722
Stephen Barnard lived at Andover (in northeastern Massachusetts) and worked as a weaver. Born about 1649, he was the son of Robert Barnard and Joan, also recorded as Joanna. He married Rebecca Howe on May 1, 1671, beginning a household that would remain associated with Andover for decades.
Hoyt’s published genealogy places Stephen among the taxpayers at the south end of town in 1692. He and Rebecca raised children including John, Hannah, Nathaniel, James, and Robert.
Late in life Stephen was involved in settling an unresolved part of his father’s estate. Hoyt reports that, because of his age, Stephen declared himself unable to act and asked that his son Robert be appointed instead. Administration was granted in February 1714/15. The remaining property was a small land division in Andover, long after the elder Robert’s death at Nantucket.
Stephen died in 1722. Rebecca survived him until 1725.
