The life of Hannah Wheeler Marble
Eighteenth century
Hannah Wheeler was the mother of Jabez and Oliver Marble, twins born at Stow, northwest of Boston in Massachusetts, on September 15, 1755. Published accounts identify her husband as Asa Marble and place their family in that Massachusetts community.
Her recorded children show a household growing over at least a decade. After the twins came Ruth in March 1758, Hannah in March 1760, Mary in September 1763, and Joseph in July 1765. The twins were nearly ten when the youngest of these children was born.
The family’s military stories center on Asa and the older boys, but Hannah’s own surviving record is chiefly that of the Stow household. It establishes her identity and children without supplying a reliable birth date, parentage, or date of death.
