The life of Mary Ann Bartlett Barker
Biography
Mary Ann Bartlett was born around 1818 at Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, in eastern England, according to the family compilation. Her documented family life belongs to the same community. She married Philip Barker there on June 23, 1839. Two years later, the household summary records Mary aged twenty-two, Philip aged twenty-seven, and a four-year-old child named Elizabeth Barrett.
Elizabeth Barrett’s relationship to the couple is uncertain. The subsequent family reconstruction lists children born through the 1840s, 1850s, and early 1860s, including a later Elizabeth and a younger Mary.
Mary is reported to have died at Castle Camps in 1870, aged fifty-two. The next census places Philip at the head of the household with five children still at home, the youngest aged eight. Her death therefore came while the family still included children of school age.
