The life of Marie Louise Nourie
Biography
Marie Louise Nourie was known to her family as Mimi. In a family-history account published through the Citizen Potawatomi Nation's leadership program, she is remembered as Delilah Bourassa's daughter: reserved in manner, proud of her ancestry, and cautious about discussing it amid prejudice against Native people.
The same account recalls a dispute over an eighty-acre allotment that the family said the government had resold, and her husband's efforts to obtain redress. Her daughter Demerise was remembered as having been required to learn English rather than French at boarding school, and later working to secure the family's place on tribal rolls.
Paul Lareau's genealogy names Marie Louise's husband as Telesphore A. Langlois, places their marriage in 1908, and names daughters Florence and Demerise. The shared daughter name helps connect the pedigree with the family recollection.
The 1986 Hownikan family account also names Marie Louise Nourie among Alfred Nourie and Delilah Bourassa’s children.
