The life of Robert Le Ber

Text size

Biography

Robert Le Ber and Colette Cavelier belonged to a family associated with Pîtres, in Normandy near Rouen in northern France. Jacques became part of the early French community at Ville-Marie, the settlement that became Montréal in present-day Québec, Canada. The family reconstruction also includes François as their son, explicitly by deduction. Writing in 1860, Étienne-Michel Faillon stated that the parents remained in France while the sons settled overseas. That is a later historian's account, rather than a surviving travel record for Robert.

The Québec cultural heritage repertory also identifies a daughter, Marie, born at Pîtres around 1643. She later joined her brothers in Canada. Robert's family thus appears in both the commercial world of the sons and the religious life eventually chosen by their sister.
