Montréal, Quebec, CanadaFamily profile
Jacques Le Ber, François Le Ber’s younger brother, arrived in Canada in 1657. The existing biography records his birth at Pistre, or Pîtres, in the Rouen diocese to Robert Le Ber and Colette Cavelier. He married Jeanne Le Moyne at Montréal on 7 January 1658.
Jacques became a merchant, fur trader, and seigneur. He and François served in Montréal’s citizen militia in 1663. With Charles Le Moyne, he built the LeBer-LeMoyne trading post at Lachine between 1669 and 1671. Parks Canada describes the surviving structures as among the oldest associated with Canada’s fur trade, at a place already used for Indigenous commerce.
His military activity included a 1693 expedition against Mohawk communities. Royal letters of nobility followed in 1696. Jacques died at Montréal in 1706. He is a collateral relative in this family, rather than a direct ancestor of Sandi, Jason, or Madison.
