The life of Nicolas Marsolet (elder)
Biography
The elder Nicolas Marsolet was baptized at Sainte-Marie-la-Petite in Rouen, on the Seine River in Normandy, northern France, on March 19, 1570. Fichier Origine identifies him as a merchant bourgeois, placing his documented work in the city's commercial life. His wife was Marguerite de Planes.
Their son Nicolas was baptized at Saint-Pierre-le-Portier in February 1601. A second baptism, reproduced in the origin dossier, records Julien in January 1603. The two records give the family a more specific setting than the surname alone: a Rouen household with children born around the turn of the century.
The elder Nicolas was reportedly dead before November 9, 1615. His son's later career as an interpreter and trader in New France belongs to the younger man.
