The life of Jeanne Serre

Text size

Biography

Jeanne Serre belonged to the Choret family of La Rochelle, on France’s Atlantic coast. She and Mathieu Choret were the parents of another Mathieu, whose life later took him to New France. Her husband's reported burial at Notre-Dame-de-Cougnes in 1636 provides a dated reference for the French household, without establishing whether Jeanne survived him.

The younger Mathieu subsequently married Sébastienne Veillon at La Rochelle in March 1647, after a contract drawn up by Pierre Teuleron. Jeanne is named as his mother in the origin dossier, preserving her identity alongside her husband's even though her own chronology remains less clear.
