The life of Nicolas Pelletier
Biography
Nicolas Pelletier, who signed his name Peltier, was baptized at Gallardon, near Chartres in northern France, on June 4, 1596. A carpentry apprenticeship preceded his marriage to Jeanne Devoisy and their move to New France with their young family around 1636.
His trade left a record in the buildings of Québec city, on the St. Lawrence River in present-day Canada. In 1639 he helped inspect the carpentry of Guillaume Hébert’s house; another inspection followed in 1644. In 1647 he built the roof framing for Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix, and around 1648 he worked on the roof of Château Saint-Louis.
Although his household settled at Sillery, now part of Québec city, he continued undertaking carpentry work in Québec. His precise death date remains unknown.
The source-cited account also records Nicolas and Jeanne leasing their farm to their son Jean in 1669 and selling the family land in 1673. It places Nicolas in a notarial record on March 23, 1678, with his death occurring before the 1681 census.
