The life of Jacques Paradis
Biography
Jacques Paradis was a master cutler at Mortagne-au-Perche, in the Perche countryside of northern France. His son Pierre followed the same trade. The family therefore belonged to the town's skilled craft community before its history became connected with New France.
Jacques and his wife, Michelle Pesle, had at least five children whose baptisms are listed in a study of the Notre-Dame registers: Jacques, Guillaume, Pierre, Jeanne, and Florent. Those entries extend from 1600 to 1612. Pierre was baptized on July 20, 1604.
In February 1632, Pierre arranged his marriage to Barbe Guyon through a contract drawn up by Mathurin Roussel. Their eventual move to Canada came much later. Jacques was a craftsman in France; his son later settled in Canada.
