The life of Thomas Hayot

Biography

Thomas Hayot came from La Piltière at Soligny-la-Trappe in the Perche, a historic region west of Paris in France. He married Jeanne Boucher at Mortagne and moved with her and their children to New France around 1638.

A contract of July 30, 1640 engaged him to clear land for Nicolas Pivert, acting for the Compagnie de la Nouvelle-France. Thomas subsequently farmed leased Jesuit land at Beauport, now part of Québec city, with his brother-in-law Marin Boucher. When their partnership ended in 1646, Thomas continued the work.

He later settled at Sillery, another settlement now within Québec city. In August 1653 he became deputy syndic, a representative for Cap-Rouge and Sillery. The surviving accounts do not establish an exact death date.

The cited family history places him alive after May 3, 1675.
