The life of Jean Guyon du Buisson

Text size

Biography

Jean Guyon was a mason from Tourouvre in the Perche, a historic region west of Paris in France. His work included the stair to the bell tower of Tourouvre’s church and repairs to Mortagne’s walls. He married Mathurine Robin, and the couple established a household in Mortagne.

On March 14, 1634, Jean entered an agreement with Robert Giffard to work in New France, France’s North American colony. His son Jean and the craftsman Zacharie Cloutier were also involved. Land at Beauport, now part of Québec city, formed part of the arrangement, although the promised acreage later became disputed. Jean’s holding was known as Du Buisson.

In 1653, Jean and Mathurine jointly gave their Mortagne house to the parish. Later, he leased his Beauport property while continuing to live there. He died at Beauport on May 30, 1663 and was buried at Québec the following day.
