The life of Edward Bartlett Wicks
Leather and banking in Syracuse
Edward Bartlett Wicks belonged to the generation in which the family's commercial life took root in Syracuse, in central New York State. Born in 1805, he was a son of John Wicks and Sarah, also called Sally, Bartlett. The family record connects his birthplace with Paris Hill, in the town of Paris in central New York State.
A Yale obituary for his son Frederick identifies Edward as a leather merchant associated with Ellis & Wicks and as president of the Mechanics' Bank. Those are distinct roles: one in the trade of a physical commodity, the other in the management of a financial institution.
Edward and Mary Lynde Babcock were Frederick Stanton Wicks's parents. Frederick later pursued law, while also serving as a director of the bank.
Edward died in 1872. The family evidence associates his burial with Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse.
