The life of Joseph Plante
Biography
Joseph Plante's life connected Château-Richer, Sorel and Île Dupas, communities along the St. Lawrence River in present-day Québec, Canada. He was born at Château-Richer on January 17, 1697, a son of François Plante and Louise Bérard. His mother died in 1699, while he was still a small child.
Before marrying Thérèse Desorcy, Joseph entered into a marriage contract before the notary Jean-Baptiste Adhémar dit Saint-Martin on August 11, 1724, according to François Marchi's genealogical compilation. The church marriage followed at Saint-Pierre de Sorel on August 27. The contract and the wedding were separate events, sixteen days apart.
Their children included Joseph, Joseph-Ambroise, Jean-Baptiste, François and Louis. Sorel appears in the records of the next generation as well as the parents' marriage. Thérèse died in 1752; Joseph lived on until April 8, 1770.
His final record belongs to La Visitation-de-l'Île-Dupas. The parish repertory cited in the published genealogy distinguishes his death on April 8 from his burial on April 10, recording his age as seventy-three.
