The life of Barthélemy Charest / Jarret
Biography
Barthélemy was born on May 25, 1790 at Saint-Philippe, south of La Prairie in present-day Québec, Canada, the son of Antoine Jarret and Marie-Anne Lamarre. His family appears under Charest, Jarret, Jarais, Jarry, Beauregard and Sharai in compiled records. Those variations make the combination of parents, wife and daughter more dependable for identifying him than any one spelling alone.
On February 22, 1813, he married Louise-Amable Poissant at La Prairie. A separate marriage index identifies the couple as Barthélemy Jarret-Beauregard and Amable Poissant, supporting the link between the surnames. Their daughter Catherine, later called Sherai or Charet, was born at Saint-Philippe in November 1816.
Catherine married Jude Bourassa in 1833. Her husband's family history is preserved by the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, providing a route into the next generation's history. Barthélemy’s death date is unknown.
