The life of Mary “Molly” Carpenter Tiffany

Biography

Mary Carpenter appears in the records under the familiar name Molly. The Carpenter family historian specifically noticed the variation: town records called her Molly, while a South Attleborough informant supplied Mary.

She married Ebenezer Tiffany at Attleborough, in southeastern Massachusetts near Rhode Island, on February 9, 1758. He was a farmer, and the Tiffany genealogy places their household at his family’s homestead. Their recorded children span more than twenty years and include sons and daughters whose lives carried the family beyond the farm. One son, Comfort, later entered cotton manufacturing; another child also named Comfort had died young.

The family experienced two documented losses in the autumn of 1789. Their daughter Content, called Tenty in the vital-record transcription, died in October at nineteen. Their son William died the following month.

Molly outlived Ebenezer by almost eighteen years. Her death was recorded on September 18, 1825, when she was described as his widow and in her eighty-seventh year. The sources disagree over whether she was born in 1738 or 1739.

The burial listing places Mary “Molly” Carpenter Tiffany at Hillside Cemetery, Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States.
