The life of Ebenezer Tiffany
Biography
Ebenezer Tiffany combined farming at the family homestead with public responsibility during the American Revolution. The Tiffany genealogy describes him as remaining on the property in Attleborough, in southeastern Massachusetts near Rhode Island, where he had been born. The Carpenter genealogy identifies his occupation as farming when recording his marriage to Molly Carpenter.
He was the son of James Tiffany and Elizabeth Allen. The family’s earlier register gives his birth as June 26, 1734. On February 9, 1758 he married Molly, also known as Mary, Carpenter. Their children included William, Ebenezer, Joseph, Otis, Content, Philena, Comfort, and Molly. The genealogy also records an earlier child named Comfort who died young, whose birth and death dates are uncertain.
His wartime role emerges from the family historian’s account of Attleborough’s committee of correspondence, inspection, and safety. Citing John Daggett’s town history, it identifies Ebenezer as a committee member throughout the war and as its head in March 1778. Such work concerned the town’s organization and support of the Revolutionary effort.
Ebenezer died on October 3, 1807. The published vital records call him “Capt.” and place him in his seventy-fourth year. His life connects the continuity of a family farm with the local institutions through which a Massachusetts town participated in the Revolution.
The burial listing places Ebenezer Tiffany at Hillside Cemetery, Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States.
