The life of Elisha Higgins

Text size

Biography

Elisha Higgins built his household around land in Eastham, on Cape Cod in present-day Massachusetts. Born about 1677, he married Jane Collins there on September 30, 1701. Their family grew over more than twenty years, including daughters who later married into the Doane and Mayo families.

The land records reproduced in the Higgins genealogy follow the expansion of his holding. A 1706 grant concerned ground around his house, connected to an exchange involving John Paine. Further entries in 1711 described land near the dwelling and along the road past it. In February 1712/13 the town granted land between his tenement lot and Cedar Swamp; another entry gave him wood remaining on Mercy Mayo's tenement lot.

Elisha's will, dated September 19, 1749, calls him a husbandman and names Rachel as his wife. Jane had died, and the family reconstruction records intervening marriages to Elizabeth and then Rachel Lincoln. The will remembered married daughters Martha, Else, Aphiah and Elisabeth, as well as Ruth and several sons. Its opening provision for Rachel returned what she had brought to their marriage and added household goods, including a warming pan and frying pans.

Elisha had died by August 7, 1750, when his will was proved.
