The life of Jane Collins
Biography
Jane Collins married Elisha Higgins in Eastham, on Cape Cod in present-day Massachusetts, on September 30, 1701. The Thomas Rogers Society's account identifies eleven children in their family, with births extending from Elisha in 1702 to Philip in 1725. Apphia, born in 1709, was one of the middle children.
The household included Martha, Beriah, Alice, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Joseph, Ruth and Barnabas as well as Elisha, Apphia and Philip. Several daughters subsequently became members of Doane households. Jane's daughter Apphia married Simeon Doane in 1730.
Jane died before Elisha's next marriage in 1739. She therefore belongs to the earlier, child-rearing decades of the Higgins household; the Rachel named in his 1749 will was a later wife. Jane's children remained visible in that will under both their original and married surnames.
