The life of Eliza Elizabeth Barker
Biography
Eliza Elizabeth Barker was born at Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, in eastern England, on November 28, 1860. By 1880 she was in New South Wales, where she married George King at Millers Forest, in the Hunter River district of New South Wales, Australia, on April 20. Unlike George’s infancy voyage with his parents, her own passage to Australia has not yet been established.
The couple’s home became the setting for a large family. They had eleven recorded children. One son, Frederick George, died as a small child. The recorded births span twenty years, from Amy in 1881 to Enid in 1901.
Eliza died on May 18, 1929, after forty-nine years of marriage. The compiled family record places her death in West Maitland and her burial in the Methodist section at Raymond Terrace. George survived her until 1944.
The family reconstruction identifies her parents as Philip Barker and Mary Ann Bartlett, although the link between Eliza and the younger Elizabeth in Philip’s household remains a probable identification. Eliza and George’s daughter Amy Lisette was born at Millers Forest on September 8, 1881 and later married George Duncan MacKy.
The burial listing places Eliza Elizabeth Barker at Raymond Terrace General Cemetery, Raymond Terrace, Port Stephens Council, New South Wales, Australia.
