Biography

William Tyler Chamberlain was born in Massachusetts in July 1839, the son of Calvin G. Chamberlain and Julia Woodward. His family’s records connect his childhood with several communities in Worcester County, in central Massachusetts.

He married Mary Elizabeth Russell in 1865. They established a household in Norwich, in southeastern Connecticut, where their daughter Minnie was born in 1868. William worked as a machinist, an occupation recorded in the biographical account of Minnie’s early life. Their children also included Elora and Melvin Russell.

William died at Norwich on November 30, 1910. His memorial records burial in the Chamberlain family plot at Hope Cemetery in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The family record gives his mother’s fuller name as Julia F. Woodward and his wife’s familiar name as Lizzie. Their daughter Minnie is identified as Minnie Mabel Chamberlain Carpenter, and Elora as Elora G. Chamberlain.
