The life of Sandra Kay Hequet Walker
Biography
A small birch-bark basket provides a tangible record of Sandi's later work. Pacific Auctions listed it in 2025 as a three-inch-high basket with beadwork, attributed to Prairiestar Walker. The maker's name connects this object with the name Sandi also used in family and public life.
Born on May 31, 1940 in Kankakee County, in northeastern Illinois south of Chicago, Sandra Kay Hequet was the daughter of Henry Joseph “Toby” Hequet and Lorraine Madeline Nourie. Michael Henry Hequet was her older brother. Her family identifies her as a Citizen Potawatomi Nation citizen through Lorraine's line.
During the 1960s she used the name Sandi Mehr. Organizational material places her in Scientology auditing and training in Boston, Massachusetts, in the northeastern United States. Family testimony describes her as a founder of the Boston organization and places her at Saint Hill Manor near East Grinstead in Sussex, in southern England and aboard Hubbard's Royal Scotman, later named Apollo, with the shipboard title of supercargo.
Sandi's five children came from three marriages. Lynn was born of her Doades marriage; Eric of her marriage to Norman Mehr; and Adam, Juliette and Jason of her marriage to Douglas Wicks Walker. Her later life took her to Maine, in the far northeastern United States. Michael's 2011 obituary named his surviving sister Sandi Walker there, while the family's account records her continued use of Prairiestar and her basket making.
Her Doades and Mehr marriages took place in Texas. The family account gives the children’s fuller names as Lynn Doades Bryant, Eric Mehr, Adam Wicks Walker, Juliette Walker McKernan and Jason Durant Walker. A July 2006 letter signed Sandra Walker/Prairiestar places her at Orneville; the 2011 obituary places her at Milo. Later family testimony places her at Dover-Foxcroft. The family also recognizes her in a 1969 photograph in The Auditor.
